Families of two of Dr. Thomas Starzl’s history-making patients meet at Baylor!

Our thanks to Dr. Goran Klintmalm, founder and head of Baylor’s Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute, for hosting one of the most exciting BURDEN OF GENIUS screenings yet! Attending along with director Tjardus Greidanus, producer Laura Davis and Joy Starzl were the families of two of Dr. Thomas Starzl’s most extraordinary cases. John Rodriguez, back row behind Joy and Laura, is the brother of Julie Rodriguez, the recipient in the world’s first successful liver transplant which Dr. Starzl performed in Denver in 1967. In the front row is the family of Stormie Jones, the world’s first double heart-liver recipient, a surgery that took place at the University of Pittsburgh in 1984. Pictured left to right are Stormie’s step-dad Alan Purcell, mom Lois “Susie” Purcell, Lois’s granddaughter and daughter Misty. Julie’s and Stormie’s stories are both featured in BURDEN OF GENIUS and the two families knew of each other, but it was their first meeting. Hopefully not the last!

Burden of Genius at University of Colorado Medical Center where it all began!

Thanks to Dr. Igal Kam for hosting a screening of Burden of Genius at the University of Colorado Medical Center where Dr. Thomas Starzl began his work in the early sixties. The transplant program went dormant for several years in the eighties after Dr. Starzl departed to establish the Thomas E. Starzl Transplant Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Kam, who completed his fellowship at Pitt, rebooted the UC program in 1988 where he was head of the transplant division for 30 years! Also attending the October 2, 2018 screening were Dr. Elizabeth Pomfret, the new head of UC transplant, Dr. James Pompselli, head of UC liver transplant, Joy Starzl, Dr. Starzl’s wife of 36 years, Ravi Starzl, his grandson, Ravi’s mom Bimla Starzl, and JulieAnn Roybal and Janelle Snyder (seen here with director Tjardus Greidanus), sisters of Julie Rodriguez on whom Dr. Starzl performed the world’s first successful liver transplant in 1967.
